Work experience? Real world experience by the bucket load
By Mike Durham
I can’t believe it’s been two years since I started coming in one day a week as an intern at HR Media – it almost feels like yesterday when I wandered in nervously on my first day.
Not that I had any need to be… the whole team has been a fabulous, friendly bunch since the beginning, so much so that perhaps my favourite part about coming in every week has just been getting to see everyone!
Of course, I joined to get some real world experience too, which I now have by the bucket load.
When I’ve told family and friends about my internship, I’ve been baffled when they rolled their eyes and asked, “do you just make cups of coffee?”
It couldn’t be any further from the truth.
I got to stand live-streaming from the starting line of the Redbrik Chesterfield Half-Marathon. I claimed the Number Crunch in unLTD magazine for my own, and I’ve written more press releases than I can count on both hands.
If it wasn’t for the skills HR Media helped me to achieve, I wouldn’t be on track to achieve a first in my journalism degree at the University of Sheffield, and I certainly wouldn’t have been lucky enough to land a job before I’ve even graduated.
I’m obviously incredibly excited to start a brand-new opportunity, but I’m also sad to be leaving behind a genuinely lovely group of people and what has proved to be a fantastic work placement.
